Adapting to
Global Climate Change: A Pennsylvania Perspective
Seldom has an environmental topic seized
the public consciousness like climate change has today.
The reports are dire: ice caps are melting, sea levels
are rising, precipitation patterns are changing. But
what are the implications for Pennsylvania? How will our
climate be affected? How are the Pennsylvania public and
private sectors responding? What does it all mean for us
as environmental professionals in consulting,
government, education, and industry?
The Board of Directors and Conference
Planning Committee of the Pennsylvania Association of
Environmental Professionals (PAEP) invite you to join
your peers in exploring these and other issues related
to climate change in Pennsylvania at the 2008 Annual
PAEP Conference, May 7-9 at the Holiday Inn
Harrisburg-Hershey in Grantsville, PA.
Attached to this
email, you will find a registration brochure with a
detailed conference agenda. To avoid late fees, we
encourage you to complete the registration form and
return it with full payment to the address provided
no later than April 18, 2008.
-
We're very excited that the
Conference Keynote Speaker at our Opening Night
Dinner will be a global leader on climate change
issues: Larry Schweiger, President and CEO of the
National Wildlife Federation. Mr. Schweiger also
served as the head on the Pennsylvania Western
Conservancy for eight years.
-
Presentations on climate change in
Pennsylvania will be made by leading officials
from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council,
the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission
and other prominent organizations as part of the
Land Use Program Track.
-
For those more interested in
professional development, a separate Program Track
will include topics such as ‘Making Wetland
Jurisdictional Determinations Post-Rapanos,’
‘Specialty Certifications for Environmental
Professionals,’ and ‘The New PennDOT Transportation
Project Development Process.’
-
The Pollution Prevention/Energy
Efficiency (P2/E2) Program Track will offer many
additional seminars, including ‘Performing an
Energy Efficiency Assessment,’ ‘ Green Building,’
and ‘Business Sustainability and Climate Change.’
-
Two “all new” alternate Traveling
Workshops will kick-off the conference on May 7:
a "North Tour" with site visits to the Locust Ridge
Wind Farm, the Frackville Coal Reprocessing Plant
and Hawk Mountain; and a "South Tour" with visits to
Three Mile Island, Keystone Biofuels Plant, and the
State Museum of Pennsylvania.
-
Also new this year is a U.S.
Department of Energy Industrial Training Workshop on
Fan System Assessment offered in the same hotel
on Thursday, May 8 separately from the main
conference but with joint meals and social
opportunities so that PAEP members and other
industrial environmental professionals can network.
-
For R&R, we’ve arranged a “Casino
Night” – transportation will be provided by the
Holiday Inn to and from the Hollywood Casino/Penn
National Racetrack in 20-minute increments on
Thursday evening.
-
The PAEP Board of Directors has
already begun to contact PAEP corporate members to
offer them an opportunity to formally sponsor some
of conference events or to purchase exhibition
space. Many of the top sponsorship opportunities
have already been sold – so act fast!
Thank you and we
look forward to your attendance!
