Working with a team of State Museum
staff led by Chief Curator Dr. Bill Sisson, SUNY-Geneseo
undergraduate intern Kathleen Quinlan researched,
scripted, and helped to design three exhibit displays
collectively titled “Nature Matters: You Can Make a
Difference.
The three displays interpret the lives and
accomplishments of Rachel Carson, Ned Smith, and Graham
Netting. Kathleen researched various sources, including
books, articles, images, and the Internet. She conducted
an oral history interview with Graham Netting’s daughter
as part of her research. She also tracked down and
gained permission to use multiple images for each
display. She drafted exhibit scripts and worked with
State Museum designers to design scale-model mock-ups of
the displays.
In addition, she made presentations about her work,
presenting one of the mock-ups to the board of directors
of the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art, a partner
institution of the State Museum. Her work has resulted
in completed scripts and complete plans for each of the
three displays. Using these products, the State Museum
plans to construct and install “Nature Matters” in its
third floor “Ecology Hall” in early 2008.
