PAEP / P2E2 Roundtable November 9, 2006
Meeting
PAEP P2E2
Roundtable Meeting was held at ATAS. Approximately 20
members of the P2E2 Roundtable met at ATAS in the
Allentown area. ATAS manufactures the InSpire wall
system that is used to pre-heat outside air before it
enters the building to provide fresh air changes and
natural humidification, as well as opportunities to
reduce energy consumption. The wall panel is mounted at
a specified distance of several inches from the outer
wall of the building. InSpire features proprietary
engineered perforations that allow outside air to be
drawn through the wall panel into the wall cavity via
ventilation fans. InSpire wall panels are coated with a
fluoropolymer (PVDF) coating system in a wide variety of
colors that allow absorption of the sun's energy to
pre-heat surface and cavity air. The solar generated
pre-heated air transpires into the wall cavity and
is drawn into the building's interior through
conventional ductwork.

PAEP / P2E2 Roundtable August 17, 2006 Meeting
Rosemarie Bartlett, Software Quality Assurance Manager
from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in
Richland, Washington, on behalf of the U.S. Department
of Energy, presented Facility Energy Decision System
(FEDS) training at the third quarterly meeting of the
PAEP P2E2 Roundtable. This was one of two national
training events, the event was held at Wilkes University
with 22 individuals participating representing:
-
Government (Department of Corrections, Tobyhanna Army
Depot, DEP's northeast and southcentral Office of Energy
and Technology -Deployment's energy team members)
-
Academia (Wilkes University representatives)
-
Private industry (Federal Mogul, PPL, Bemis Flexible
Packaging, General Dynamics Scranton Operations, etc.)
-
Consultants (Borton-Lawson Engineering)
-
Service providers such as PENNTAP.
-
Some companies also attended from the southcentral
region.
The training was interactive and the FEDS software was
loaded onto computers at Wilkes University. FEDS
conducts assessments and analyzes energy efficiency in
single or multiple buildings. It provides an easy-to-use
tool for identifying retrofits, selecting minimum life
cycle costs, determining payback, and enabling users to
prioritize options. FEDS determines the optimum set of
cost-effective retrofits from a current database of
hundreds of proven technologies. These include retrofits
for heating, cooling, lighting, motors, building shell,
and hot water. Replacement or modification
considerations vary from complete replacement to
functional enhancements to fuel switching. Additional
information on the software can be found at
http://www.pnl.gov/feds/

PAEP P2E2 Roundtable Annual Statewide Event held
5/18/2006
The NE P2E2 Roundtables recent affiliation
with the PAEP helped to contribute to a PAEP statewide
conference this year that, according to PAEP, was bigger
and better than previous conferences! One hundred and
fifty individuals participated in the joint venture at
the Ramada Inn in State College that featured a wide
range of presentation topics and technical expertise
among attendees. The P2E2 seminars were filled to
capacity with over 25 individuals from across the state
in each session that came to learn about combined cycle
coal technology, industrial energy efficiency,
Pennsylvania's Energy Policy, Green Buildings,
Environmental web based courses and emergency response
lessons from Katrina. The goal was to offer a diverse
mix of presentations that would be appealing to PAEP's
vocationally diverse mix of environmental specialties.
Many new contacts were made for the roundtable including
Concurrent Technologies Corporation and DOE personnel.
The Wilkes University student presentations at the
conference generated much interest among the
participants and new contacts with other colleges in
attendance will increase student project exhibits and
student participation at next year's event. The FEDS
training that will be provided at the August Roundtable
meeting by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was
also promoted. The PAEP Roundtable thanks all DEP
personnel and other speakers and moderators who
contributed toward making this event successful!

PAEP/P2E2 Roundtable November 17,
2005 Meeting.
On November 17, the Northeast
Pennsylvania Association of Environmental
Professionals (PAEP) P2E2 Roundtable held their last
quarterly meeting of 2005 at the Lehigh County
Government Center in Allentown. Speakers and their
presentations for the session included:
-
Jeff Luzenski, PPL - "Improving
Your Battery Recycling Without Short Circuiting
Your System"

Part A
-
Doris Farley, AERC - "AERC's
Recycling Solutions for Mercury, Lamps, and
Batteries"

-
Brian Hilliard, PADEP - "Mercury
Related Waste Issues"

Part A
Following the presentations, Doris
Farley and Robert Landmesser from AERC provided an
exciting and informative tour of their recycling
center where participants discovered how their
wastes are processed for recycling. A total of 26
individuals attended the meeting including some from
other regions. Some of the attendees included Osram
Sylvania (northcentral region)
www.sylvania.com,
one of the three largest lamp manufacturers in the
world, and AMEC (southeast region)
www.amec.com, an
international project management and services
company employing around 44,000 people in 40
countries. AMEC's services include everything from
planning, funding and design - through regulatory
and environmental compliance, to project management
and delivery. Gentex Optics
www.gentexcorp.com, site of our first joint
PAEP/P2E2 Roundtable, sent two representatives and
stated that their management is thrilled that they
are part of the PAEP/P2E2 RT organization and
graciously offered to host a future meeting bringing
in their affiliate management from their
international corporate facilities!
During the “Mercury Related Waste
Issue” presentation materials such as the Hazardous
Waste Regulation Compliance Guide: Requirements for
Managing Universal Wastes were distributed. Brian
Hilliard provided valuable waste management input
during the question and answer session.
Below is a picture of Doris Farley,
AERC, giving her presentation and also a photo of
participating audience members.
Following the tour, the Steering
Committee held a luncheon meeting where plans were
discussed for next year. The tentative schedule includes
the 2/16/06 trip to Phillips Lighting in New Jersey.
Transportation is an issue and a snow date will be
designated in case of inclement weather (ideally the
snow date will be the following Thursday, 2/23/06).
In May (5/18/06) there will be a P2E2 track at the PAEP
statewide conference to be held in State College at the
Ramada Inn and we are still developing the speaker track
in addition to trying to connect with our roundtable
colleagues across the state.
In August 2006 (8/17/06), we are looking
to host a session on the Facility Energy Design System
(FEDS) by pulling in a national training expert,
connecting with the local college maintenance personnel
committee and also opening this up to our P2E2
roundtable members. Ideas for speakers include Brain
Hilliard - DEP; Mindee Osno - EPA, and Eric Thumma -
DEP. Wilkes has offered to host the session in one of
their computer labs.
The last meeting (11/16/06) may be hosted by Chamberlain
Manufacturing Corporation on their new Biotreatment
process. One idea is that we may be able to reconnect
with the Jim Houston's Pretreatment Information Exchange
(PIX) group (POTW operators) as this topic would be of
considerable interest to them. PPL also offered to
possibly host a meeting regarding their recent breech of
their fly ash impoundment and lessons learned.
Other ideas generated were the creation an electronic
feedback form that would be posted on the PAEP/P2E2 RT
website that would be mailed to meeting participants
directly linking them to the PAEP web page.
Dr. Marleen Troy discussed the development of additional
internet courses in conjunction with Dr. Robert Pojasek
of Pojasek & Associates. The Roundtable would like to
expand interest in these courses to former P2E2
Roundtable members across the state. An additional
project that was discussed was a mentoring pilot program
in which Wilkes University, under the guidance and
direction of Dr. Marleen Troy, submitted for external
funding. If Wilkes is a recipient of the grant, the
Mentoring Program will be built into the P2E2 Roundtable
where a RT business, a small business, and Wilkes
University students will partner to mentor the small
business in environmental affairs. The meeting of the
Steering Committee is pictured below.

P2E2 Roundtable Holds First Event as part of PAEP at
Gentex and Waymart Wind Farm

On August 18th, thirty P2E2(Pollution Prevention-Energy
Efficiency) Roundtable members met at Gentex to tour the
optics side of their facility and learn about P2
practices, ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 . Mr. Donny Long,
Plant Manager, addressed the audience and spoke about
the company's corporate philosophy. The company is owned
by the French ESSILOR group and has plants world-wide.
The optics portion of the company in Carbondale employs
280 people. The Roundtable toured the facility where
over 70% of the world's prescription optic lenses are
manufactured. The Gentex plant in Carbondale was
recognized in house as the "Best in Class”
internationally because of their lean and efficient
manufacturing practices.
Following the tour, the group met at the Waymart Wind
farm where they toured the 43 wind turbines on site. The
Waymart Wind Energy Center was completed in 2003. The
facility is owned by Florida Power and Light (FPL). FPL
is the largest generator of wind power in the United
States. The 65 Megawatt project located in northeastern
Pennsylvania consists of 43 GE Wind Energy 1.5 MW wind
turbines and is connected to the transmission lines of
PPL Electric Utilities. Electricity generated by the
wind turbines is being sold to Exelon Generation
Company, LLC.
Gentex was an excellent host and commemorated the first
joint P2E2 Roundtable / PAEP event with personalized
amber optic lenses with the inscription "NEPPRT + PAEP
8/18/05" and the participants name. We received
excellent feedback about the meeting which lasted a
total of six hours.
